Dr. Mary Hughes and colleagues have conducted research on Mackinac Island, Michigan across 30 years. In fact, this research is ongoing. While it is well-understood that bicycle helmets reduce the risk of severe injuries and fatalities, this does not mean that all populations wear them. We're evaluating over time whether the availability of and familiarity with helmets increases their use. Specifically, are children who grew up wearing helmets more likely to wear them as adults? Data analysis is ongoing.
